What is an exotic bet?
An exotic bet allows you to wager on multiple runners in a single race. The goal is to correctly predict the correct finishing order of multiple horses within a single bet.
What exotic bet types are available at Picklebet?
Quinella: Pick two or more horses to finish 1st and 2nd in any order.
Exacta: Pick two or more horses that will finish 1st and 2nd in the exact order.
Trifecta: Pick three or more horses that will finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the exact order.
First Four: Pick four or more horses that will finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the exact order.
What is the difference between straight, combination, and boxed exotics?
Straight exotics: You must pick the exact finishing order with one runner in each position.
Combination exotics: You select multiple runners for one or more positions (e.g., selecting two horses to finish 2nd in a Trifecta). This creates multiple combinations.
Boxed exotics: You select several runners for all positions, and they can finish in any order.
How do I place an exotic bet?
To place an exotic bet:
- Select the tab for the relevant exotic type (Quinella, Exacta, Trifecta, First Four).
- Select your runners for each position.
- Enter your total stake, or your per-combination stake.
- Confirm your bet.
How are payouts calculated?
Your total stake is divided by the number of combinations in your bet, and then multiplied by the dividend.
For example, if you place a $100 Trifecta with 20 combinations, your stake per combination would be $5 ($100 / 20 combinations).
If the Trifecta dividend is $500, your payout will be:
$5 (Combo Stake) * $500 (Dividend) = $2,500 payout
What happens if a horse is scratched?
If a runner is scratched, any combinations that include that horse will be voided, and the stake for those combinations will be refunded with your payout after the race. Valid combinations without the scratched runner will still stand. If a scratching means all combinations are void the whole bet will be void and immediately refunded.
Can exotic bets pay less than my total stake?
Yes, if the payout on the winning combination is lower than the total stake, the payout may be less than what you initially bet. This can happen when the dividend is smaller than the total number of combinations on the bet.
How is the dividend determined for exotic bets at Picklebet?
At Picklebet, exotic bet dividends are calcuated using a bespoke algorithm based on the Starting Price for runners, to deliver a fair and consistent payout.
Why don’t you offer tote-linked exotics?
At Picklebet, our exotic dividends are calculated independently from the tote pools. This allows a consistent delivery of payouts, and means your winning ticket won’t dilute your dividend.
Are there any minimum field requirements for exotic bets?
Yes, the minimum field sizes for placing exotics are:
-
3 runners: Quinella, Exacta
- 4 Runners: Trifecta
-
5 runners: First Four
Can I place exotics on international races?
Yes, Picklebet offers exotics on both domestic and international racing events across thoroughbreds, greyhounds, and harness racing.
Can Bonus Cash be used on exotics?
No, bonus cash cannot be used on exotics at the moment. However, this may change in the future.
Will there be deductions on exotic bets?
No, since our exotic dividends are determined using the Starting Price (SP) of the place getters, there are no deductions applied to your exotic bets.
What happens if there is a dead heat for one of the positions?
If one of the finishing positions finishes in a dead heat, multiple dividends will be declared for bets involving that place getter. Your full stake per combination will be paid at the specifically declared dividend for your winning combination. If your bet contains multiple winning combinations you will be paid for all combinations that are winners.
